ABOUT SCULPTED METALS

Kia ora, I’m Nathan Whitehead

I am the founder of Sculpted Metals Limited, established in 2006, with my journey in sculpture beginning decades earlier, and my first dedicated studio established in 1997.

My passion for art started in my youth and has grown into a lifetime commitment to creating sculpture inspired by New Zealand’s natural world — its native birds, wildlife, forests, and coastline.

Over the years, I have worked across a wide range of materials, including bronze, aluminium, copper, steel, pewter, wood, bone, greenstone, ceramics and clay sculpture, fibreglass, along with fine art mediums such as watercolours, oils, and pastels, continually refining my craft through hands-on experience and learning from skilled tradespeople along the way.

Craftsmanship & Approach

My work is not mass-produced.

I specialise in:

  • One-off original sculptures
  • Limited edition pieces
  • Custom commissions

Each piece is carefully developed, often over months, using both traditional and modern techniques — including the lost wax bronze casting process, producing work of lasting, heirloom quality.

Influence & Inspiration

Having lived and worked across many regions of New Zealand — from the deep south to the East Coast, the King Country, and now the Coromandel — I have developed a deep connection to the land and sea.

Experiences in farming, forestry, hunting, fishing, and time spent in nature have all shaped my perspective and continue to influence my work.

Quality Over Quantity

Every sculpture is handcrafted in New Zealand, with a strong focus on quality, detail, and authenticity.

My work is created for those who value:

  • Craftsmanship
  • Originality
  • A genuine connection to New Zealand

A Personal Note

I am grateful to those who choose to invest in my work.

Each piece represents not just a sculpture, but a lifetime of learning, experience, and dedication to the craft.
